It later became a school, then dormitory-style housing for seminary students. In 1996, Rhett House Inn owners Steve and Marianne Harrison bought the two-story building and renovated it into 7 additional guest rooms, all with fireplaces, whirlpool baths and separate showers. About 12 years ago they built a home at the back of the inn that blends perfectly with the rest of the neighborhood with its red tin roof. Seven of the Inn’s rooms are found in the Cottage just across the street from the back of the property. This building, was built in 1846 as a store for freed slaves to buy and sell goods.

A 2017 study found that clove oil was 88% effective at repelling carpenter ants. This is likely due to the insecticidal properties of eugenol, a compound extracted from clove.

Odorous house ants are only about 1/8-inch long and have beehive-shaped abdomens. Carpenter ants are large, ranging from 1/4-inch to 5/8-inch long. They are dark brown or black, but some species may have red or yellow coloring. Wingless adult ants are the colony’s workers, who are in charge of gathering food, feeding larvae, sustaining the nest, and protecting the colony.
