A cartoon representation is featured in South Park as the base of a Chinese gang in the episode "Wing", satirizing the popular association of the Ennis House with criminal and/or Asian characters in films. This upper level Cottage room features a king bed, private porch, private entrance, gas fireplace and a private bath with jetted tub and separate shower. We wanted a typical old southern style house and it was perfect. A film documenting the house, called The Ennis House, was shot in hi definition digital 3D by film maker Tom Koester. An early cut of the film premiered at the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy Conference in Chicago, October 2007, but has had few public showings.

The mantels top the four original fireplaces remaining in the main house. The fireplaces in the Parlor and Dining Room are wood-burning and used regularly during the winter, inviting guests curl up with a good book next to the fire. With two different verandas that are perfect for relaxation.

Even before its completion the Ennis House was marked by structural instability. Concrete blocks had cracked and lower sections of the walls buckled under tension. The use of decomposed granite from the site to color the textile blocks introduced natural impurities to the concrete mix, and combined with air pollution caused premature decay. Attempts to apply a protective coating caused additional problems. It was during the long ownership by the Foundation from 1980 to 2011 that the house was used as a filming location, establishing it as one of the most famous houses in Los Angeles. The story of Taylor Swift's Holiday House from 'the Last Great American Dynasty'

The property has seven bedrooms and six bathrooms and includes a three-bedroom apartment next door for Swift’s security team. Indeed, Swift has risen to become the second richest self-made woman in music — with her net worth at a cool $740 million. She has surpassed Madonna’s net worth of $580 million, but ranks behind Rihanna, whose net worth is $1.4 billion. The other pictures show the crew sharing some drinks, sharing a red, white and blue popsicle, and, it looks like, singing karaoke. After skipping the iconic bash for several years, Taylor Swift posted pictures on Instagram on Friday of her celebrating at her Watch Hill Mansion for several of her famous pals. Taylor Swift is bringing back all her different eras – including the Fourth of July party in Rhode Island.

Despite its modest facade, the four-bed, four-bath ranch features white beamed ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass, and, best of all, a 1,000-bottle, climate-controlled wine cellar. It sold for $2.65 million in September, $300,000 less than the asking price. In 2014, Swift bought not one but two adjacent penthouses in an old TriBeCa building at 155 Franklin Street, converting them into one large duplex that has a total of 10 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, a billiards room, and an incredible sweeping staircase.

Last day to save! Roborock just solved all of our problems with this cutting-edge vacuum on sale

Only three years after purchasing the two TriBeCa penthouses, Swift expanded horizontally, purchasing the century-old townhouse right next door. The home, equipped with luxury amenities including a home theater, gym, guest suite, and terrace, is estimated to be valued at $18 million. It was built in 1915 and was fully renovated by architect and designer Leopoldo Rosati. Swift was so fascinated with Rebekah that another song on Folklore is titled “Betty,” a clear reference to Rebekah Harkness’s nickname. Taylor Swift is notorious for her autobiographical style of songwriting, incorporating her own life experiences into her music.

And it opens on to 700 feet of sandy shoreline — a perfect location for A-list parties.

Only a select few know what happens in the safely guarded compounds of her High Watch house, perched atop Watch Hill, the historic district in Westerly, Rhode Island. In her day, Harkness was as much of a media darling as Swift is now, and often the target of unfavorable headlines and press coverage. The name is said to come from the wives of mariners, who would watch for their spouses’ return, often in vain as the ocean took their lives, leaving the women widows.

Several other friends of the super star have also shared photos inside the home’s white kitchen. Back in 2015, several of her famous friends — including Gigi Hadid, Joe Jonas and Martha Hunt — shared photos from the fun-filled weekend to their Instagrams. Although Swift never got the chance to meet the socialite, Harkness still made an impact on the singer-songwriter, who wrote “The Last Great American Dynasty” about her wild lifestyle. Swift’s song highlights some of the most outrageous antics the heiress was known for, which included filling up her pool with Dom Pérignon, dyeing one of her pets green, and having a relationship with Salvador Dali (himself known as one of the most eccentric artists in modern history).

There are several versions of the album available, including a CD, cassette, vinyl and digital album. Swift announced the album at the Grammys, when she won her 13th career Grammy for pop album of the year. According to JackpotCity’s study and Google search data, the most Taylor Swift-obsessed state in the U.S. is California, where phrases related to Swift are searched an average of 1,436,100 times each month.

It’s well known around these parts that comedian Conan O’Brien is a New Englander, with a Boston, Irish Catholic background and a Harvard degree to boot. Slightly less known is that his family has a vacation home in Watch Hill, which the "Conan" host bought in 1997. Taylor Swift's Rhode Island residency is home to plenty of celebrations for the pop star. The first a Cape Cod-style cottage for $4 million, the other a smaller single-story home she used as a guesthouse for $2.65 million. In 2017, she purchased a 100-year-old, four-story townhouse next door for $18 million. The three-story townhouse on Franklin Street comes with a gym, a spa, antique French wide-plank oak floors and a planted terrace with a Japanese paper glass wall. In 2018, she bought the second-floor complex to the building for nearly $10 million. The unit, which she bought from financier Jeremy Phillips in an off-market deal, spans 3,540 square feet.

Justin Bieber sparks fans' concern as he breaks down in tears in Instagram snaps

With the 2020 release of her eighth studio album, Folklore, fans got the opportunity to see a different side of Swift, as she moved away from writing music from her own perspective and, instead, chose to share other people's stories. "I found myself not only writing my own stories, but also writing about or from the perspective of people I've never met, people I've known, or those I wish I hadn't," she explained in a tweet announcing the arrival of her album. Taylor Swift bought an 11,000-square-foot estate in Rhode Island back in 2013 for a whopping $17.75 million — which she reportedly paid for in cash. It should come as no surprise that Swift has a special relationship with her Rhode Island mansion; just last year, during an appearance on Ellen, the singer said that the property is her favorite place to spend holidays.

Swift likens her own star-studded parties to the bevy of famous composers and dancers that once frequented the Holiday House in Harkness’ days. The mansion was once owned by Rebekah Harkness, a high-profile socialite who famously married into the Standard Oil fortune. And since celebrity homes are in our blood, especially when they come with their own backstory, we just had to do our due diligence and look up Taylor Swift’s house (and the story behind it), and boy, is it a good one.

Arguably one of her most beautiful abodes, it’s old charm complete with modern renovations makes for beyond luxurious (not to mention costly) digs. Her rise to the top began on a Christmas tree farm in Cumru Township, Pennsylvania, before the Swift family moved 15 minutes away to a five-bedroom home in Wyomissing, just outside of Reading. It was in a Georgian Colonial–style home that she first began to exhibit an interest in music and started to play guitar. At 14, Swift convinced her parents to move to Nashville to pursue her music career—which is where she made her first official real estate purchase, in 2009, a condo that she still owns today.

Outdoor features include a gated entrance, terraces, swimming pool and a summer house. The house was built in 1929–1930 for the Snowden family, owners of an oil company, who named it Holiday House. It was purchased in 1948 by Rebekah Harkness, socialite and Standard Oil heiress, who became notorious amongst the local residents for her lavish lifestyle there. In 1974, businessman Gurdon B. Wattles purchased and renovated the house, renaming it as High Watch due to its location.

Who Is Clara Bow? The Inspiration Behind Taylor Swift's Song

taylor swift rhode island house

In the lyrics of Taylor Swift's song, "The Last Great American Dynasty," she tells listeners that her Rhode Island mansion sat empty on the coast for 50 years before she purchased it. She also mentions a woman named Rebekah, and it didn't take fans long to discover that the woman in question was Rebekah West Harkness, an heiress from St. Louis who once owned the property, as reported by The Washington Post. Although the private pop star, 34, hasn’t shared many images of the vacation property herself, several of her A-list pals have given glimpses inside the home while uploading images from the lavish bash — known as Taymerica — to their social media over the years.

You can see Swift giving her guests the tour.

A true Brooklyn girl, she never got “cultured,” and never put on fake airs, like other Hollywood transplants from Brooklyn did. She was kind not just to people who could help her, but to crew members and performers who were coming up behind her. She was, for a time, engaged to Hollywood director supreme Victor Fleming; then she fell hard for shy, strapping, ethereally handsome Gary Cooper—because, well, who wouldn’t?

High Watch

Most recently, Swift gained approval from the Beverly Hills Cultural Heritage Commission to turn the estate into a historic landmark. The mansion used to belong to Hollywood film producer Samuel Goldwyn until Swift bought the home in 2015. She reportedly made the purchase in an all-cash deal, paying a whopping $17.75 million. More recently, she’s made headlines in 2023 for racking up thousands from the city’s Sanitation Department for failing to keep the sidewalks in front of her building clean, according to city records. The song "Great American Dynasty" is part of her set list in the Era's Tour.

Taylor Swift Needs to Become Other People

With seven bedrooms, eight fireplaces, a glorious pool, and shoreline views extending 700 feet, this mansion is one of her most impressive buys. A big star with a big reputation, Taylor Swift is arguably the most well-known of Rhode Island’s celebrities. Dubbed the “Holiday House,” the Watch Hill mansion was bought by Swift in 2013, complete with an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a past that ties it to the Standard Oil fortune. The songwriter spun the story of the house’s past — and the divorcee who lived there, Rebekah Harkness — into the song "Great American Dynasty” in her eighth studio album, "Folklore." Taylor Swift surprised all of us when she dropped her latest album, Folklore, on July 24. While fans quickly went to work decoding the lyrics and searching for Easter eggs in the music video for "Cardigan," another song on the album also caught people's attention.

“Clara Bow,” it turns out, isn’t about Clara Bow the person at all, though it could be said to be about Clara Bow the vibe. Is it possible to be beautiful and charismatic to the point of possessing a kind of cosmic power that draws success to you? The song opens with the lines “You look like Clara Bow in this light, remarkable/ All your life, did you know you’d be picked like a rose?

The 33-year-old superstar—who recently completed the first U.S. leg of her record-breaking Eras Tour—is worth an estimated $570 million, according to Forbes, $150 million of which she has invested in real estate. The eight-bedroom property, known as High Watch or Holiday House, was built on the highest point in Watch Hill and boasts over 700 feet of private beachfront. Several stalking, trespassing, and home invasion incidents have been reported at the house since Swift's purchase.

The Fascinating Story Behind Taylor Swift's Rhode Island Holiday House

The house, which was built in 1929, belonged to oil heiress Rebekah Harkness for over 30 years. In a very Taylor fashion, she was inspired by this romantic lifestyle which led her to put to use her famous storytelling talent. She reportedly bought the crib in 2013 and paid $17.75 million in cash for the 11,000-square-foot property.

Which US states have the most Taylor Swift fans or Swifties?

But imagine our surprise when we heard that one of the songs on the album is a reference to the Grammy Award-winner’s house in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. Since then, the musician has put her hard-earned, lavish home to good use by hosting numerous parties with famous friends, known as her squad. Fans speculated the album is mostly about Swift’s six-year relationship with English actor Joe Alwyn and their breakup. Both stars kept the relationship out of the public eye, but this album gives fans more leverage to guess at what happened between the two. "The property owners had inspired my father to want to make it for them and you know he was so thankful for the work at the time that he thought it would be a good tribute to incorporate it into the wall of that property," said Salvatore Cherenzia, the President of Cherenzia Excavation.

Rod Stewart’s Swanky $74 Million Beverly Hills Estate

The company was the largest oil refiner in the world in the late 1800s and early 1900s, which made Rebekah one of the richest women in the US. Because of their wealth and love for the lavish lifestyle, the Harkness couple purchased the mansion in Watch Hill, RI, which they nicknamed The Holiday House. Swift rented this 1870 brick townhouse, made famous after her well-known lyric “I rent a place on Cornelia Street,” between 2016 and 2017 while her $50 million TriBeCa loft was undergoing renovations. Today, this charming dig is officially on the market for a cool $17.9 million or available to rent for $45,000 a month. Luxury features include double-height ceilings, antique Parisian brickwork, and a variety of glamorous chandeliers.

Page Six shared the report of Gigi and Bradley's stay on Instagram, where fans chimed in with their strong opinions—from the cynic's calling out the pair's relationship as a PR move to the many dreaming of borrowing one of Taylor’s pads one day. "@taylorswift can I use one of your places to escape too 😂😂😂 I need a mom time out from my kids lol." Taylor Swift has gone through her many eras accumulating a vast real estate portfolio, and the musician doesn't hesitate to loan a home or two to her celeb friends in need. After recently lending Sophie Turner her New York City apartment, the Queen of Pop is reportedly letting Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper stay in her Rhode Island home (which may be haunted!) to explore their rumored romance. Despite Swift’s jet-set life, she stuck to her roots when purchasing her second Nashville home, a sprawling Greek Revival known as Northumberland Estate. The impeccably designed home, which she purchased in 2011 for $2.5 million, features a 5,600-square-foot main house with a 2,000-square-foot guesthouse, complete with vaulted ceilings, herringbone floors, and marble fireplaces.

Schulberg took a chance on her, only to soon realize that both the camera and audiences adored her. Then he exploited her, farming her out to other studios and pocketing gargantuan profits, even as audiences—and not only men—fell deeply in love with her. The “Clara Bow” lines “You’re the new god we’re worshipping, promise to be dazzling/ Beauty is a beast that roars down on all fours, demanding more” sum up her trajectory well. But not long after her win, she awoke one night to find her mother poised over her with a butcher’s knife, intent on killing her, though Sarah fainted before she was able to go through with it.

It includes eight bedrooms, eight fireplaces, and a pool in the back, which was the site of a notable Fourth of July party that Swift hosted this month. The international Taylor Swift frenzy that followed the pop star’s 2022 release of “Midnights” and the announcement of her record-breaking “Eras Tour” has done nothing but get stronger. The house was built by Guilford Dudley Jr., a former US ambassador to Denmark. The quiet neighborhood isn’t a typical choice for A-listers, which is probably one of the reasons she chose it. It’s rumored that her song “The Last Great American Dynasty” was inspired by this property.

The 11,744-square-foot holiday house boasts 700 feet of shoreline and offers sweeping views of Little Narragansett Bay, per Business Insider. According to See Westerly, Watch Hill was used as a lookout during battles dating back before the French and Indian War. High Watch, formerly named Holiday House but locally known as the Harkness House, is an 11,000 square feet (1,000 m2) home situated in Watch Hill, a historic district in Westerly, Rhode Island. These days, when she is in Music City, she is probably spending her time at the grand Greek revival estate known as the Northumberland Estate.

Although the “Anti-Hero” singer took a break from hosting the star-studded party for a few years, she held a smaller gathering this past Fourth of July alongside BFFs Selena Gomez and the Haim sisters. Meanwhile, Martha also posted several snaps of the home’s exterior, showing the tiled patio with white lounge chairs as well as the pool area — which was decked out with inflatable toys and a slide. Here's how to get rid of ants, including natural ant repellents, ant prevention tips and ant bait and killer spray recommendations. Although ants can be beneficial to the ecosystem, they can also be pests.

Other tips to prevent ants

This includes insects beneficial in your home and garden, such as ladybirds, mantises and parasitoid wasps. The first step to dealing with ants in your house is ensuring they don’t have access to food. Ants that are more attracted by proteins can also be snared with a borax-based mixture. Combine a large spoonful of peanut butter with a tablespoon of powdered sugar and a teaspoon of borax.

Ants vs. Carpenter Ants vs. Termites

They can contaminate food and spread diseases, and some biting and stinging ants produce allergic reactions in humans and pets. Further, some species of ants can cause structural damage and chew through household wiring. Ants search for food using pheromones, leaving a trail for other ants to follow.

Eliminate Damp Spots and Rotted Wood

That can also help you locate any problem areas or ant hubs to focus your removal efforts on—like that open bag of cereal you forgot about. T0 stop your pesky ant problem in its tracks, we've gathered the best methods to get rid of ants safely and keep them at bay year-round. Whether you're approaching the problem from the indoors or outdoors, read on for how to get rid of ants safely. Limiting ants’ access to food will encourage them to move out. This may require taking additional steps beyond your normal cleaning routine.

If home methods don't work, the infestation is large, or you see some damage from carpenter ants, consider bringing in a pest control specialist. One 2014 study showed that, in high concentrations, cinnamon essential oil could repel and kill ants. However, sprinkling the powdered cinnamon you have in your spice cabinet won't be as effective. Ants will just learn to avoid it and go to other parts of your home. Having ants in your house can be a pesky, frustrating problem. As long as you're diligent about keeping a clean house and making sure there's no food lying around, your ant problem will disappear as quickly as it came!

Clean your home by vacuuming, sweeping, and decluttering potential hiding spots. This natural method is safe to use around children and pets while being one of the most effective ways to keep ants out of your home for good. When they discover a tasty treat, their job becomes to let their colony know it is there. To do this, they leave behind a pheromone trail and make their way back home.

In addition, they are scavengers, helping to reduce the numbers of other insects—including those we consider pests. Ants are part of the insect order Hymenoptera and count bees and wasps among their relatives. Create a syrupy paste with borax, confectioner’s sugar and water. Put the mixture inside shallow containers with narrow, ant-sized openings and place them near ant mounds or wherever you see ants.

With that pleasant thought in mind, we asked our pest-management experts about the best way to get rid of ants. Amanda Rose Newton is a pest specialist and horticulture expert, reviewing pest control and gardening content for The Spruce's Cleaning and Gardening Review Board. Her passion for pest control and sustainable gardening allows her to review plant and pest content for best practices and accuracy. She is a board-certified entomologist and volunteers for USAIDs Farmer to Farmer program.

Stay Away From Sprays

This means more frequent re-treatment will be needed to fully eliminate an ant problem. A better spray option is a non-repellent spray formulated for outdoor use. Ants will be less likely to avoid spots where these sprays are applied and transport them back to the colony. Some ants are more attracted to sweets and some to fats and oils. To ensure you have the broadest range of attractants, use both carb-based and protein-based bait traps. Baits can be placed in an area where you have seen ant activity in the home, but do not place them directly on an ant trail; ants will avoid bait traps placed in this manner.

how to get rid of ants in house

Squeeze lemons into a spray bottle, or rub a pureed blend of orange peel and water on window sills and doors jambs to discourage the itsy-bitsy insects from crossing over. These structures will rot from neglect and function like a red carpet for carpenter ants. The best way to get rid of ants there is to keep your deck in tip-top shape. Below, we’ve highlighted two decking materials that are wood alternatives, as well as a top-rated wood stain to protect a wooden deck from further damage. Keep foods sealed, pet bowls empty, floors swept, and all surfaces clean.

Sprays can be used indoors to supplement baiting; in the event that ants already have an established food supply indoors, they may ignore baits. Sprinkle coffee grounds — If you’re a coffee drinker, don’t throw out your used grounds. The smell of brewed coffee grounds makes an effective ant and pest repellent.

Thus, we’ll also offer our recommendations for the best pest control companies that treat carpenter ants. Diatomaceous earth is a natural substance that is made from fossilized diatoms, tiny organisms found in water. Naturally occurring, it's found in underground deposits and kills ants and other pests. "Food-grade diatomaceous earth is one of the most effective natural methods to get rid of ants," says Carpenter. Beyond cinnamon, there are a few other ways to deter ants from invading your home.

Ants occasionally come inside in search of water, particularly during dry periods. In this case you may see them in bathrooms or other humid parts of the house. You'll probably be able to identify an ant hill or pile in your yard or near your home's foundation. Mark them with yard flags or something similar so you'll know exactly where to come back to. Apply sprays into crevices along baseboards and around all openings in the home such as windows, doors frames and patio sliders. It might seem like there's nothing you can do to keep ants out year after year — but there are certain tricks that can make all the difference.

What’s more, essential oils are an inexpensive way of leaving your home smelling fresh. Just keep away from pets as essential oils could be harmful if ingested. Ensuring your home is sealed tight and free from open food and water sources, and that your backyard is free of anthills, will be your best bet in evicting the little pests. If you're worried about an outdoor bait attracting more ants or want to ensure the colony near your house is killed off, consider adding Borax to the DIY mixture. A 2017 study found that clove oil was 88% effective at repelling carpenter ants. This is likely due to the insecticidal properties of eugenol, a compound extracted from clove.

Odorous house ants are only about 1/8-inch long and have beehive-shaped abdomens. Carpenter ants are large, ranging from 1/4-inch to 5/8-inch long. They are dark brown or black, but some species may have red or yellow coloring. Wingless adult ants are the colony’s workers, who are in charge of gathering food, feeding larvae, sustaining the nest, and protecting the colony.
